We are the only estate to own a vineyard with its own Roman funerary temple — the only one of its kind preserved in its original form on the Mosel. Archaeological digs suggest that during Roman times a plantation once stood here on the site of our current estate. Yet we have many other ties to the Romans and to Italy as well. It has been passed down through the generations that our ancestors were exiled from their Scandinavian homeland during the 16th century and fled to Italy. They later came to the Mosel as artisanal sculptors, creating the impressive stonework at the palace of the elector-princes in Trier. From there they chose to settle on the lovely Mosel.
A full recounting of our estate's history must, however, also account for the wine. Specifically Elbling, a variety whose revival we helped usher in. Elbling has been cultivated along the Mosel at least as far back as the Middle Ages; it was in fact long the most common variety in this region before being displaced by other grapes over the course of the 17th century. As the young, new and motivated chairman of the Society of Elbling Friends of the Southern Wine Mosel, we are working hard to restore this heritage variety's reputation as a Mosel specialty: through new marketing strategies, many new events and experiences for both locals and tourists to our southern wine Mosel.
And so the circle is complete — from the Roman origins of our estate to the cultivation of this white wine grape with a history stretching back well over 2000 years old.
