This year's ProWein exhibition motto of the German Wine Institute (DWI) „Grapes for the Future“ met with great interest from trade visitors from all over the world and ensured consistently high visitor numbers at the DWI stand.

The 20 wines from the PIWI collection, which had previously been selected from over 200 wines by a jury of experts, were in great demand at the DWI tasting counter on all three days of the exhibition. The moderated tastings at the DWI stand were also very well attended.

The ProWein balance sheet of German exhibitors was also positive overall, benefiting in particular from the presence of numerous international trade visitors. As DWI Managing Director Monika Reule emphasised, they showed great interest in the wines from the German regions and were very impressed by the quality of the new vintage. "The high proportion and professionalism of the experts who travelled here once again underlined the importance of ProWein as the most important wine fair in the world," explained Reule.

Best PIWI wines tasted

On the opening day of the ProWein trade fair, the DWI presented the three best wines from the PIWI collection on show. The winner of the DWI competition was the 2022 Souvignier Gris trocken from the AUFTAKT line of the Weingut Abthof from Hahnheim in Rheinhessen. Second place went to Winzergenossenschaft Britzingen Markgräflerland from Baden, which was honoured for its 2022 Souvignier Gris Eiswein from the Britzinger Sonnhole vineyard. The Rainer Antweiler winery from Volxheim in Rheinhessen came third with its 2023 Sauvignac feinherb.

The award winners, who were present in person, received their trophies and certificates from DWI Managing Director Monika Reule and German Wine Queen Eva Brockmann. With her congratulations for the first-class wines, Reule emphasised: "These three wines demonstrate the high quality level of the new robust grape varieties in a very special way. From quality wine to ice wine, they are in no way inferior to the classic varieties. Together with the 17 other wines presented here, they also demonstrate the wide range of flavours of PIWI wines, which enrich the diversity of German wines.“
