Positive Outcome for Symposium of the Institute of Masters of Wine
Germany was the centre of the wine world for four days as host of the International Symposium of the Institute of Masters of Wine (IMW). The event welcomed 500 wine experts from 47 countries to Wiesbaden.
Along with the IMW, the hosts were the DWI, the city of Wiesbaden and the state of Hesse. In addition to informative lectures and lively discussions with top-class speakers, numerous tastings were held which required a total of around 35,000 glasses. The guests were also invited to exclusive evening events in which Germany as a wine country showcased its best side.
German Wine Night inspires wine experts
On the last evening, the DWI, together with the regional wine associations, invited guests to the "German Wine Night", a high-calibre gala evening at Schloss Biebrich – a castle on the Rhine River. After the sparkling wine reception, which was sponsored by the Raumland and Schloss Vaux sekt producers, more than 60 regionally typical wines from Germany’s growing regions were presented for tasting. This was supported by "Rhineland-Pfalz Gold" among others. A tasting highlight was certainly the rarity tasting with wines from Kloster Eberbach dating back to the 1935 vintage. The culinary delights of the evening were complemented with the contributions of sponsoring partners Zwiesel Glas, Original Selters mineral water, Radeberger and Kaffeerösterei Müller.
In addition to these sponsors, the symposium organisers received valuable support and sponsorships from many other renowned brands and industry associations, once again underlining the importance of promoting excellence and innovation in the world of wine.
Journeys to the wine-growing regions
The evening events kicked off with Henkell-Freixenet, followed by the VDP, which divided the participants among 20 wineries, each of which hosted other member wineries. In the run-up to and after the symposium, more than 100 participants also took the opportunity to get to know the German wine regions with their wines, terroirs and local producers of the German wine regions on six different tours. They thus followed the invitations of the regional wine associations of the growing regions Ahr, Franken, Mittelrhein, Mosel, Nahe, Pfalz, Rheingau, Rheinhessen and Sachsen.
Positive Outcome
From the DWI's point of view, the IMW Symposium was a unique opportunity to present Germany as a wine country at its absolute best to numerous important multipliers from all over the world. The extremely positive response from the international guests is proof that this was an outstanding success.

Background: The IMW International Symposium is considered the most important event in the global wine calendar. It started in Oxford in 1982 and was last held in Logroño, Spain, in 2018. The 10th International Symposium will return in 2023 and will span four stimulating days, focusing on current trends defining the industry and how the industry will evolve in the future. Participants can expect world-class tastings, thought-provoking presentations and controversial debates on topics such as the impact of climate change or diversity in the wine industry.
