100 days in office: The 77th German Winequeen takes stock
On January 4, the 77th German Winequeen, Anna Zenz, looks back on her first 100 days in office. She found the first few months of her term to be very enriching and eventful.
“I was particularly impressed by the enormous range of tasks – from political discussions and specialist events to direct exchanges with consumers,” says Anna Zenz.
Ambassador's contribute own ideas
Among the highlights for her were the reception at the German Embassy in The Hague on German Unity Day and the international DWV Congress under the motto “Wine culture – precise, efficient and sustainable development.” There, she was able to contribute her own ideas in her welcoming speech and numerous discussions.
Another highlight was the first two tours of Germany with the German Wine Princesses Katja Simon and Emma Meinhardt. Together, they visited the Hessische Bergstraße and Mosel wine-growing regions. “Here, we were able to talk to many wineries and experience the enthusiasm and passion of the producers firsthand,” says Anna Zenz.
Encouraging sign for the industry
The 77th Wine Majesty sees the increasing number of male candidates in the wine royalty elections as an encouraging sign for the industry: “This development shows that enthusiasm for wine, expertise, and commitment are now recognized regardless of gender.” Personality, competence, and passion for German wine are what matter, she says. Opening up the competitions makes them more contemporary and reflects the diversity of the industry.
Challenges as opportunities
Despite current challenges such as declining wine consumption, rising costs, and climate change, the winequeen believes the industry is well positioned: “I see a very innovative and committed wine industry. Quality, sustainability, origin, and conscious enjoyment are becoming increasingly important.” The industry also sees the challenges as an opportunity to reposition itself - through cohesion, new sales markets, and target groups - for example, through non-alcoholic wines, creative marketing strategies, and raising awareness of high-quality regional products made by skilled craftsmen.
