"Der Feinschmecker" activated a team of experts to taste around 4,000 German wines - from sparkling wine to Auslese - selecting "rising stars", "discoveries" and their "collection of the year".

The current 2024 vintage, which we mainly tasted from the glass for this guide, proved itself to be a cool-climate representative par excellence in many ways: we were able to taste wonderfully fruity, aromatic, and yet elegant wines. Extract, minerality, substance—everything was there, even though the late frost and heavy rainfall of the vintage took a lot out of many winegrowers.
Unsere Experten-Jury, die sich für die intensive Verkostung der angestellten Weine in das Grand Hotel Elysée in Hamburg zurückgezogen hatte, konnte viele Lorbeerkränze verteilen – und nicht nur an durchaus etablierte Betriebe wie Klaus-Peter Keller, Willy Schäfer, Philipp Wittmann oder Franz Keller, die sich keineswegs ausruhen, sondern immer weiter an den Qualitäten ihrer Gewächse feilen. Schön ist es aber zu auch zu sehen, wie viele junge Winzer ehrgeizig nach vorn preschen, etwa Gröhl, Barth und BurckhardtSchür mit Winzersekt, Spiess mit Rotwein sowie Hans-Christoph Stolleis oder Rebecca Heger, die den Weingütern ihrer Familien eigene Prägung verleihen.
Current trends and developments
The trends are clear: the shift towards natural viticulture continues apace, German sparkling wine is getting better and better, and Germany is becoming more and more like Burgundy – partly due to climate change (diverse German Chardonnays are well worth discovering!). Orange wine, on the other hand, seems to be fading, and Piwis are stagnating. In any case, there are fantastic wines with an attractive price-pleasure ratio, as this guide shows, which is intended to be your compass through the current German wine world. For us, wine remains an indispensable cultural asset, the result of craftsmanship, passion, tradition, and ambition, a substance that brings people together.
