Press: “DFB Bets on German Wine”
To mark the 20th anniversary of the “Summer Fairy Tale” World Cup (2006), the media company “Verlagsgruppe Rhein Main” (VRM) is highlighting the wine selection served in the VIP and hospitality areas during the national team's home matches. The German Wine Institute (DWI) has been supporting the DFB with the tendering process and conducting extensive wine tastings ever since. The current selection for the German Football Association (DFB) will remain in place until 2027.
VIP guests can once again look forward to an exclusive selection of wines from German wine-growing regions (see PDF below) at home matches of the German Football Association (DFB) this season, according to reports in publications such as the Allgemeine Zeitung Mainz (May 6, 2026, p. 10).
From over 300 submitted wines, a total of 20 wines were selected in October 2025 through several blind tasting rounds. These have been served since October 2025 in the VIP areas at home games of the women’s and men’s national teams, the men’s U21 team, and at the two DFB Cup finals in Cologne and Berlin. The current selection includes four red wines, four rosé wines, eight white wines, two sparkling wines, and two non-alcoholic options from seven of Germany’s 13 wine regions. The two largest wine regions, Rheinhessen and the Palatinate, are particularly well represented with a total of eleven wines.
Personal Interaction and Image Building
For the first time this season, winemakers are personally providing expert guidance at the wine and sparkling wine bars during select national team matches. This fosters direct contact between guests and producers—a special opportunity to get to know the wines through direct interaction with the people who make them.
“The diverse selection of German wines in the DFB’s VIP areas contributes significantly to shaping Germany’s image as a wine-producing nation and offers soccer fans an excellent opportunity to discover high-quality local wines,” emphasizes DWI Managing Director Melanie Broyé-Engelkes.
Successful partnership since 2006
The DFB has been featuring wines from German wine-growing regions at its matches since 2006. The successful partnership with the DWI has been in place for just as long. Part of the new selection will make its debut on October 10 at the men’s national team’s home match against Luxembourg in Sinsheim.
