Germany's vineyards present themselves magnificently
According to the German Wine Institute (DWI), the vines in the vineyards of the 13 German wine-growing regions are currently very healthy and well developed.
In some cases, the first red grapes are already turning color. The ripeness of the grapes is only a few days behind that of the previous year, which was also early.
No extensive damage
Apart from local hailstorms, the vines have been spared any major weather-related damage this year. Fortunately, the record temperatures of up to 39 degrees Celsius at the beginning of July hardly led to any sunburn on the grapes
Drought causes concern
However, winegrowers in many regions are concerned about the lack of rainfall or its often very uneven distribution. The resulting drought is particularly stressful for young vineyards, whose roots do not yet reach deep into the soil. Older vines on deeper soils generally still find enough water.
Harvest of Solaris wine grapes expected at the end of August
According to the current state of development of the vines, the grapes for the first so called "new wine" (Federweißer) are expected to be harvested in the penultimate week of August. According to the current forecast, the general start of the harvest for early-ripening grape varieties will be in the first week of September.
Mix aus Sonne und Landregen
Bis dahin wünschen sich die Winzerinnen und Winzer sonniges, nicht allzu heißes Wetter mit dem ein oder anderen ausgiebigen Landregen.
