At the DWI booth in Hall 1 (C120), a total of 16 white wines and four red wines of the new varieties will be available for free tasting from 10 to 12 March.

The collection was selected from over 200 wines in a two-stage process by wine experts from the retail, marketing, production and media sectors and includes wines from ten different grape varieties from eight growing regions. It provides a good insight into the wide range of flavours and the high quality potential of these new innovative varieties.

With five wines, the white wine variety Souvignier Gris took up a quarter of the wine selection presented. It impressed the jury both in the dry segment and with two noble ice wines. Cabernet Blanc, the most important white wine variety among the PIWIs in this country with 260 hectares under cultivation, is represented with three dry wines. The relatively young Sauvignac variety made it into the final selection with two wines. Other white wine varieties to be tasted at the DWI stand include Calardis Blanc, Muscaris, Solaris and Hibernal, as well as two cuvées made exclusively from the new varieties.

With the Regent variety, Germany's most important robust red grape variety is also represented in the DWI ProWein collection. Other PIWI red wines that can be tasted include the varieties Satin Noir, Cabertin and a red PIWI cuvée.

The list of PIWI wines at the DWI booth can be downloaded at the bottom of the page.

Award ceremony: Best of PIWI 2024

The DWI will announce the three top-rated wines on Sunday at 11 a.m. at the DWI stand.

Increased environmental awareness boosts interest

For DWI Managing Director Monika Reule, this year's trade fair theme is an absolutely forward-looking theme: "The interest and acceptance of consumers and producers for the new robust grape varieties, which require less plant protection due to their resistance, has grown significantly in recent years due to climate change and increased environmental awareness and will become even more important in the future. With our presence at this year's trade fair, we want to show domestic and international trade visitors the wide range of flavours and quality potential of these new varieties, in the cultivation of which Germany is leading the way.

Wines from the north of Germany

Now that more and more vineyards have been planted in northern Germany in recent years and these are predominantly planted with PIWIs, the DWI is offering the opportunity to taste a selection of wines from the north of Germany at this year's ProWein on Sunday at 3.30 pm and on Tuesday at 3.30 pm.

Generation Riesling at ProWein

This year, for the ninth time, the DWI is organizing a joint presentation for the Riesling generation in the immediate vicinity of the DWI booth (Hall 1 / E121). Ten members from seven wine-growing regions from the world's largest organisation of young wine producers will be presenting their current wine collections.

Following the slogan "Love the wine you're with", the German Wine Queen Eva Brockmann and the two German Wine Princesses Lea Bassler and Jessica Himmelsbach will present the young winemakers and their wines at the DWI booth once a day.

„Don’t mess with my wine“ is the motto on Monday at 5.00 pm, when Generation Riesling invites you to a relaxed end to the fair with an evening meal (German Abendbrot) at the stand.

The flyer for the Abendbrot with Generation Riesling  is available for download at the bottom of the page.
