“Sales of German wines in China are a success story,” writes the portal ‘Vino Joy News’ in its latest issue. The reason for this assessment is that Germany has recently stood out positively in China's wine import statistics.

According to the 'Vino Joy News' platform, Riesling and other German wines are transforming the white wine market in the land of the rising sun.

With a volume increase of 8.34% (4.66 million liters) and a value increase of 8.51% (26.36 million US dollars), Riesling sales played a decisive role. Germany's international competitors, on the other hand, once again recorded declining figures in the same period, according to the Chinese information portal.

Presence in retail/distribution channels expanded

The growing popularity of German Riesling is reflected in its increasing presence in China's retail and distribution channels, according to 'Vino Joy News'.

The success of Riesling in China is no coincidence - it is the result of strategic, long-term promotion by the German Wine Institute (DWI). Founded in 1949 and based in Bodenheim near Mainz, the institute has played a key role in establishing and expanding Riesling's presence in the Chinese market, particularly following the opening of a Wines of Germany - China agency in Shanghai in 2015.

Confidence in long-term potential strengthened

Looking ahead to 2025, the German Wine Institute plans to further expand its presence in China by working with importers and retail partners in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. More than 50 Riesling-themed events will be held, including birthday celebrations, joint dinners, retail promotions and online promotions.

The campaigns not only ensure that Riesling continues to grow in popularity in China, but also help retailers and distributors to gain confidence in the long-term potential of German wines. The message is clear: German Riesling and other wine creations from Germany will strengthen the role of white wine in China and, according to 'Vino Joy News', even redefine it.
