Germany’s main grape harvest advances rapidly after an early start

Another notable characteristic of the 2026 vintage is the exceptionally rapid ripening of grapes across all of Germany’s wine-growing regions. The hot summer has accelerated ripening to such an extent that harvesting is already under way from Saxony to Lake Constance. The main harvest is expected to begin in earnest during the first week of September.

The 2026 harvest is likely to progress very quickly and conclude relatively early, as almost all grape varieties are reaching maturity at the same time. In addition to sugar levels, growers are paying close attention to acidity levels when determining the ideal harvest date. Acidity must not fall too sharply if white wines are to retain their characteristic freshness.

Satisfied with quality

Winegrowers are reporting strong satisfaction with both the quality and health of this year's grape crop. They expect the harvest to produce aromatic white wines and deeply coloured red wines.

However, yields are likely to fall below average, as the prolonged dry conditions have resulted in smaller-than-usual grapes.

Producers are hoping for predominantly dry weather in the coming weeks. Significant rainfall could accelerate ripening further and hasten a harvest that is already progressing rapidly.
