Insights into Steep Slopes and Artisanal Craftsmanship

Along the Mosel and Middle Rhein rivers, as well as in the Rheingau, participants from Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, the U.S., and Brazil experienced firsthand the demanding work on steep slopes. Germany's winemakers presented their vineyards, wines, and working methods, while Katja Simon provided background information on the diversity of German wine.

Focus on research and climate change

Another stop on the itinerary took the group to Geisenheim University. For Katja Simon, who is completing her master’s degree there, this visit was a homecoming. The focus was on current issues surrounding climate change in viticulture, as well as insights into the university’s research.

Exchange Across National Borders

“The participants in the press tour were able to experience firsthand what sets German viticulture apart—how much craftsmanship and passion goes into it, and how that is reflected in the glass,” summarizes Katja Simon.

For her as well, the international exchange was an enriching experience: “The dialogue with people from different countries was incredibly exciting, and I was able to answer numerous questions about German wine.”

Developments in the International Market

Internationally, “Wines of Germany” is gaining prominence, with quality increasingly taking precedence over quantity.

  • Rising Digital Interest: Data from the wine app Vivino shows that scans for German wines rose by 5.69% in 2025—a figure well above the European average growth rate of 4.40%.
  • Export value vs. volume: In 2023, the total value of German wine exports rose by 4% to 384 million euros, even though the volume exported declined slightly by 2%. This indicates successful positioning in the premium segment.
  • Growth markets:
Poland: The value of exports here has quadrupled since 2013
China: Record figures were recorded for sales volume and average prices (approx. €5.12/l)
Netherlands: Strong value growth of approx. 10% in 2023.
