Steady Growth: German Wine Gains Momentum in China

In recent years, German Riesling has experienced a real boom in China, with both popularity and sales steadily increasing. According to the latest data from the Chinese customs authority, China imported 4,052,453 liters of German wine worth USD 20,493,385 between January and September. This represents growth of 13.41% in volume and 2.03% in value compared to the previous year – clear evidence of the growing importance of German wines in the Chinese market.

Record Participation with 57 German Exhibitors

Driven by this positive trend, German wine exporters have significantly increased their focus and investment in the Chinese market. At the upcoming ProWine Shanghai, the German wine industry will showcase a record participation of 57 exhibitors51 in the German Pavilion and six at individual stands. This increase marks an impressive 73% rise compared to the 33 exhibitors last year.
The presence of this largest-ever group of German winemakers not only highlights their strong commitment to the Chinese market but also confirms the growing trend toward German wines – especially the popular Riesling – in China.

Guided Tastings & Masterclass

Throughout the three-day fair at the joint BMLEH & DWI stand (Stand No. W5C85), short seminars on wine topics will be held regularly. A tasting table featuring 19 selected wines from the exhibitors invites trade visitors to explore.
On the afternoon of the second day, 13 November, a special highlight awaits the visitors – the professional Masterclass “The Diversity of German Wines.” This tasting will present twelve German wines from eight wine-growing regions and seven representative grape varieties. The carefully curated selection offers participants a comprehensive tasting experience to discover the diversity of German terroirs and the distinct characteristics of each grape variety.
