Great vintage after turbo harvest

25.09.25

For the winegrowers, the 2025 wine year was a rollercoaster of emotions. The harvest started exceptionally early with almost perfect grapes hanging in the vineyards.

However, they almost all ripened at the same time. This circumstance alone required a speedy harvest, which was further accelerated by the onset of rainfall from mid-September. Here, the wineries' investments in fast grape processing paid off, which is becoming increasingly necessary in times of climate change with its extreme weather conditions.

Wine harvest largely completed

From Baden to the Rheingau, the grape harvest is therefore already largely over, while the Riesling on the Moselle, Middle Rhine, Nahe and Ahr will still be harvested for a good week. The harvest is also still underway in Saale-Unstrut and Saxony.

Excellent Pinot and red wine vintage

Thanks to the very good grape ripeness, very good wine qualities are expected nationwide. „2025 will definitely be a great Pinot and red wine vintage“, explained Ernst Büscher, spokesman for the German Wine Institute (DWI). But other early-ripening varieties such as Müller-Thurgau also benefited from the late summer weather. During the harvest, the red wine grapes were as colourful as they were aromatic.

The harvest volumes are likely to be slightly lower than expected before the autumn, which is due in particular to smaller grape berries and below-average must yields in some cases.
