Federweißer harvest started in many growing regions
The grape harvest for the 'Federweissen' is clearly picking up speed this week in many German wine-growing regions. As the German Wine Institute (DWI) announced at the start of the harvest in Baden, the ripening stages are already relatively advanced and the grapes are in excellent health nationwide.
The Löffler winery in Staufen picked grapes of the Solaris variety from the Grunerner Altenberg vineyard with an exceptionally high must weight of around 92° Oechsle. Consumers can therefore look forward to very aromatic and fruity new wines from local regions.
No large-scale damage
So far this year, winegrowers have been spared any major weather disasters. Only some hailstorms have caused damage to vineyards in some regions.
Good ripeness
With replenished water reservoirs and midsummer temperatures, ripening is currently progressing rapidly. The grape harvest for sparkling wine production is also scheduled for August. At the beginning of September, it will seamlessly transition into the harvest of early-ripening grape varieties for winemaking. The later-ripening Riesling should be ready to harvest from mid-September this year.
Dry weather desired
The weather in the coming weeks will be decisive for the further harvest and ripening process. If it remains largely dry during the harvest period, nothing currently stands in the way of a good quality 2025 vintage.
